What We Believe...

Because of our visibility in the community, you may have heard something about Bethany Center Church .  You may have heard that we’re growing, or that we’re an American Baptist interdenominational church, or that Bethany Center folks sure seem enthusiastic about being a part of this church.  You also might have heard that we are alive and growing, open to format changes and adjustments made according to the needs of the church family…  Whatever you’ve heard, here are some important facts about what we believe about our focus and mission as a church.

First and foremost, Bethany Center is centered on Jesus.  We believe that Jesus Christ is our Savior and our Lord.  ‘Savior’ in that we are reconciled to a loving God through Jesus, and ‘Lord’ in that we believe that we are to follow God as the leader of our lives by living out our faith every day.  We believe that these are important foundations for authentic faith.

For our 183-year history, we have focused on following Jesus, and have put our confidence in Him.  Jesus taught his followers about the joy of life when we are authentically connected to God.  This connection in relationship with God is why we have seen so many changed lives at Bethany Center.  So many marriages healed, habits conquered, friendships made, people in need served.  These life changes are an outcome of the purposes God gives us to live out.

God gave every believer purposes to live by as individuals, and together as part of God’s larger family: His church.  Jesus’ biblical purposes are:

Connecting
…baptizing them…”
We are adopted into God’s family when we connect with Jesus.  We’re then connected with our brothers and sisters in God’s family.  This connection gives us many family benefits to enjoy including loving support, encouragement, friendships, and a healthy environment to grow spiritually. Bethany Center grows ever “warmer” through Connecting.

Growing
…Teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you…”
Once connected, we can begin to commit to an intentional process of growth.  Spiritual maturity is no accident.  Healthy spiritual habits improve our relationship with God and others.  Learning about God is a lifetime endeavor that brings us to maturity, balance, and joy.  As a church, we become “deeper” through Growing.

Serving
‘Love your neighbor as yourself’
God gave us each unique gifts intended to be used to help others.  Discovering our unique design (or SHAPE) for serving is a key step in understanding God’s will for our lives.  Together our church becomes more “loving” through Serving.

Reaching
“…go and make disciples…”

A healthy loving family always shares blessings with others.  The good news of God’s unconditional love is best demonstrated by reaching out to invite others to knowledge of God’s great love for them. Bethany Center becomes “broader” through Reaching

Worshiping
“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart…”       Worshiping God in every facet of our lives give us joy,      health, and balance.  An abundant life is one filled with gratitude to God, and balances all His purposes of Connecting, Growing, Serving, Reaching, and Worshiping God.  Placing God in His rightful place in our lives allows us to respond to His profound love for us.  Our church family becomes “stronger” through worshiping.

These biblical purposes are best summarized in two of the best-known scriptures of the New Testament known as Jesus’ “Great Commandment” and His “Great Commission.

A great body of scripture further supports and defines these purposes as God’s call to be His people in a healthy church that closely follows God’s will in every aspect of our lives.  Being “biblical” as a church concerns much more than having good biblical teaching on Sunday (as important as that is).  A biblical church is one focused on God and His purposes in all aspects of what we are and do.  A church that has focus on God’s purposes, and has them in balance, is a healthy, biblical church.  And, like a healthy child, a healthy, biblical church will always grow.

So, bottom line, Jesus, His love, and His purposes are what Bethany Center is all about.

We feel that Jesus’ scriptural purposes are God’s primary design for church focus, rather than a focus on denominationalism.  This is why we describe Bethany Center as “interdenominational”.  People from every faith background are welcome to discover Jesus’ love with us.  Please join us for one of our many opportunities to learn about God’s love.  Come check out our theology, our programs, and the many resources for your family.  We love guests, we love kids, and we’re ready to welcome you and your family into our family.  See you this week –  Sunday at 10:45am

Our Statement of Faith

Bethany Center Baptist is an American Baptist  inter-denominational church that was established in 1820 in the Town of Bethany.  Our members come from many church backgrounds, both Protestant and Catholic.  We are an evangelical church that holds the following tenets of belief:

 1.      We believe that the Bible is the Word of God and is inspired and inerrant as originally given.

2.      We believe that God is eternal, three persons in one:  Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

3.      We believe in the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ, His virgin birth, His sinless and perfect life, His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, His bodily resurrection, and His present dominion at the right hand of God the Father.

4.      We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit, whose indwelling enables the Christian to lead a Godly life; and whose baptism provides power for service.

5.      We believe in the resurrection from the dead of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved into the resurrection of life and those that have not known God into the resurrection of judgment.

6.      We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in the Lord Jesus.

7.      We believe in the table of the Lord, commonly called Communion or the Lord’s Supper, for believers.

8.      We believe in the personal return of the Lord Jesus Christ in power and glory to receive His church unto Himself.

9.      We believe that worship is our number one priority.

10.  We believe that prayer is the touchstone of our power.
